What Big Skin Care Companies Don’t Want You to Know

If you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from the pain of dry cracked skin, chances are you’ve searched the aisles of your local drug store for a cure only to be disappointed by product after product.  And most likely you’ve invested hundreds of dollars over the years on lotions that just end up sitting on your bathroom shelves or in the trash.

You are not alone.

Wonder Ingredients that go nowhere
The skin care industry is a multi-billion dollar industry with companies racing to create the newest wonder ingredients and fight for top celebrity endorsements all designed to get you to purchase their brand. What many of these larger companies aren’t telling you is that using their lotions could be prolonging your dry skin condition.

The truth about dry, cracked skin
Dry cracked skin is a result of a damaged skin barrier that is not functioning properly.  Normal, healthy skin has an intact skin barrier that protects the thin layer of natural lipids and keeps in moisture.  Once the skin barrier becomes damaged the skin begins to lose it’s own natural moisture leading to dry skin or skin irritation. Conventional lotions aren’t designed to restore the skins barrier which is why many of them do not actually cure dry skin. Many conventional lotions use chemical ingredients that add an artificial layer of moisture to skin which just leaves skin feeling greasy instead of really handling your dry skin  problem.

Dr. Lisa Benest, a board certified dermatologist, further explains why conventional lotions don’t really work, “Regular moisturizers are designed to add moisture onto the skin. However it does nothing to repair the barrier so it’s an endless cycle of constant moisture application onto the skin without healing and curing the dry skin. Many traditional moisturizers restore the moisture to the skin on a temporary basis, but after continued use actually send a message back to the skin saying it doesn’t need any further moisture to be produced by the skin, and so we can end up with the opposite condition where the skin is less hydrated than prior to using the moisturizers.”

A new discovery that shields your skin
That is why the researchers at 21st Century Formulations, a small US based skin care company, took years to develop and release its Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion. Shielding lotion is a new category of lotion designed to restore and strengthen the skins own natural barrier. By strengthening the skins natural barrier Skin MD Natural allows your skin to heal itself, getting rid of dry skin for good. Skin MD Natural also has the added benefits of being free from gluten, fragrances, parabens, dyes, and other harsh ingredients that can damage your skin.

“And then I tried Skin MD Natural…

“Skin MD Natural is not only a moisturizer, it is a shielding lotion. And that is what makes this product so different then others in the same category.”

Blueberries – The New Skin Care Super Food

Summer is quickly approaching and before you know it, your local supermarket shelves will be bursting full of fresh fruits and berries.  You should have your eyes open for one especially powerful type of berry – blueberries. Although small in size, blueberries pack a large punch of antioxidants and skin benefiting nutrients.

Blueberries receive their dark blue color from a plant pigment Anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a powerful antioxidant that’s helps give blueberries a higher antioxidant count than green tea. Antioxidants are beneficial for the health of your skin because they fight and neutralize free radicals that cause skin damage, aging, and cancer.

Blueberries also have vaso-protective abilities which is a fancy way of saying that they help promote the health of your small blood vessels. This can minimize the appearance of redness commonly associated with the skin condition called rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that often causes the face to appear flushed with pimples or bumps around the cheeks, nose, and forehead that can last for days.  Another symptom of rosacea is small red spider-web like veins that can also appear on the face.

You can get all the benefits blueberries have to offer by adding them to your diet and using them in your own homemade skin care products. If you don’t want to wait for blueberry season you can always purchase frozen unsweetened berries. Frozen blueberries work great for making yummy smoothies and your own skin care products.

For a tasty breakfast treat try blending together one-half cup of plain low-fat yogurt with  one half cup of blueberries and add one fourth teaspoon of honey for added flavor.

For a quick and easy at home facial blend together one half cup of blueberries with 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of plain, unsweetened yogurt. Apply the mixture to your face and allow to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Dermatologists Recommend Shielding Lotion for Natural Dry Skin Care

If you’ve tried lotion after lotion to only find your dry skin getting worse you’re not the only one. The reason your dry skin continues to get worse with the use of a conventional lotion is because these lotions do nothing to break the dry skin cycle. Conventional lotions work with one basic goal in mind – to make up for the moisture that our bodies are losing by adding an external source of moisture. For that reason alone, many dermatologists recommend Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion.

Skin MD Natural is a new type of skin care product that actually breaks the dry skin cycle by strengthening the skin’s natural protective barrier and keeping skin naturally hydrated.

Dr. Peter Helton of Newport Beach, CA explains why shielding lotion is superior to conventional lotions:

“Skin MD Natural has the benefit of forming a natural barrier, sealant on the skin, keeping its own natural moisture inside, This obviates the need for having to put an external moisturizer several times during the day, as Skin MD lasts a good portion of 8 hours with one application. This is important, because it decreases your need for applying excess moisturizer and allows body to take care of its own moisture needs without the added bother of putting on another cream.”

“The concept of a shielding lotion is relatively new to dermatology and skin treatment. It binds to the skin such that the environment is not allowed to penetrate and desiccate the skin, essentially forming an invisible shield around and throughout the skin just like an invisible glove would. This is important as it allows the moisture to be maintained within the body and disallows, stops any products from harming the skin, like cleansers, acids, and all everyday solvents that we come into contact with.”

Dr. Lisa Benest of Burbank, CA explains how Skin MD Natural helps break the dry skin cycle and why it works for her patients:

“Regular moisturizers are designed to add moisture onto the skin. However it does nothing to repair the barrier so it’s an endless cycle of constant moisture application onto the skin without healing and curing the dry skin. Many traditional moisturizers restore the moisture to the skin on a temporary basis, but after continued use actually send a message back to the skin saying it doesn’t need any further moisture to be produced by the skin, and so we can end up with the opposite condition where the skin is less hydrated than prior to using the moisturizers. A shielding lotion is a lotion that provides a natural barrier on top of the skin to protect it from outside chemicals and irritants. In addition it also acts to keep the moisture and the oils in the skin, so that the skin can heal itself. Shielding lotions not only protect the skin’s barrier but they restore the moisture to the skin and allow the skin to continue to moisturize itself, so that your skin does not become addicted on the moisturizer and ultimately cures the dry skin.”

“With the shielding lotion, first off it’s a thin layer, so it does not clog the pores, it allows skin to breathe and it is what we call non-comedogenic – it won’t promote acne. But in addition, it also protects the skin while allowing it to breathe. There are thousands of skin irritants that exist in our environment that weren’t around just decades ago – things like soaps, shampoos and cleansers – can strip away the natural barrier.

“In my practice in dermatology I see many incidents of contact dermatitis, where the natural coating has been stripped just from daily use of soaps and other irritants. So at that point any kind of chemical can enter into the skin and cause contact dermatitis. We see this as red dry itchy skin. Now shielding lotions such as Skin MD will help restore that barrier and then maintain that barrier even after hand washing so that it’s protected against any harsh chemicals that our skin may come in contact with. It is an excellent skin treatment product.”
